Girl Power! (and the parents who made it happen).
Meydanli Demirel (49) is a farmer and shepherd in Arpaçay district of
Kars province's Küçük Boğaz village. Demirel and his wife Tevrat (47)
have been able to educate their seven (!) daughters by working their own
land and in the fields of others.
Two of Demirel's daughters have graduated from university, one is
preparing for university, two are in high school and one is in elementary
school. Eldest daughter Aynur (27) married after high school but
Ayşenur (25) graduated from Kafkas University's Economy and
Administrative Sciences Faculty, while Şennur (22) finished Çanakkale
18 Mart University's English Teaching Department. Yeter (20) is now
preparing for university and Seyran (16) and Güllü (15) attend Arpaçay
Anadolu High School. The youngest daughter, Hazal, is in Arpaçay
elementary school.
Meydanali bey, himself just a grade-school graduate, explained that each
year he sells a cow to help with his girls' education expenses.
Arpaçay district (not shown) is northwest of Akyaka
in Kars province.
