More proof, if any was needed, that no good deed goes
unpunished in today's world...
Barış Özer drives a city bus in Antalya. On 22 October, Özer
found the wallet belonging to Iranian tourist Ali Jafari on his
bus and returned the wallet, containing 30,000 TL worth of
money (about $5,000), to Jafari. Again, on 30 October, Özer
found the wallet of a security guard with 95 TL and credit
cards in it so he returned that to its rightful owner, as well.
However (!), news of Özer's honesty was met on social media
with derision for his failure to pocket the money he found (!).
Now, when someone searches Google for "salak şoför"
(dunderheaded bus driver) Özer's name and picture come up!
Özer, understandably chagrined by this unfavorable reaction
to his honesty, stated that "when someone searches Google for
'salak şoför' my name appears. This is what I get for being honest.
It's disappointing. One day an elderly man who'd forgotten his
wife on the bus pounded on the door of my bus, urging me to
stop the bus so he could retrieve his wife. We encounter all sorts
of incidents as drivers."
