Ouch!!
The lionfish, which lives primarily in the Indian Ocean and is one of
the world's deadliest fish, has taken advantage of warming seas to
invade both the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. The lionfish lays
nearly 2 million eggs annually and is deadly for other fish species.
Recently, lionfish have been found in the fishing nets of fishermen
in the waters off Antalya's Kekova, Kaş and Kalkan districts,
Muğla's Ortaca, Dalyan, Marmaris and Bodrum districts and
Izmir's Karaburun and Seferhisar districts.
Double Ouch!!
Experts warn that the poisonous lionfish should not be touched
but (!) amateur fisherman Serdar Söyler, who was hunting for lionfish
(pterois miles) in the waters off Antalya with a zipgun, had a lionfish's
poisonous quill touch his foot resulting in days of treatment for the
dead tissue affected. Söyler related that "the fish's poisonous
quill just grazed my foot. Thinking that I was poisoned, I put ice on
the wound. The fish's poison is so deadly it can kill a person."
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Gökoğlu of Akdeniz University explained that
"If Serdar bey had put his foot in very hot water his wound
wouldn't have been so bad. The very hot water causes the poison
to lose its effect."
Ouch Machine!!
