"Beat & Release": His Burning Desire Leaves Wife Aflame

   Hmmm, why does this seem so familiar...

Ekrem A. (29), a textile factory worker in Muratlı, Tekirdağ, was the 

subject of a complaint filed with the police by his wife Ayşe A. (29),

alleging that he beat her over the course of the past two years.  

However, "for the sake of our two children", Ayşe hanım rescinded her

complaint.

Nevertheless, the trial continued "in the public interest" and Ekrem A.

was sentenced to 3 years, 8 months in prison on 8 March.  Ekrem A.

remained free while the case was sent to an appeals court.

On 21 March, Ekrem A. contacted Ayşe hanım and said "we have to 

talk about the case.  Let's go to a lawyer together and get some advice."

However (!), Ekrem A. picked up Ayşe hanım on his motorcycle and

brought her to a wooded area in Hacıköy village in Süleymanpaşa 

district.  There, he said to his wife "You've blackened my life! You

burned me so now I'll burn you!"  Ekrem A. then doused Ayşe hanım

with gas, lit it and fled.

Aflame, Ayşe hanım ran for her life and came to a road 500 meters 

away.  Passers-by called the authorities who first brought her to

Tekirdağ City Hospital and from there to Lütfi Kırdar City Hospital

in Kartal, Istanbul, for treatment of her burns.

Soon after the incident, the Gendarmerie picked up Ekrem A. and

saw that he had burns on his hands.  In his statement, Ekrem A.

claimed that he suspected that his wife had cheated on him.  During

their discussion about this matter, an argument erupted, prompting

Ekrem A. to get agitated and douse Ayşe hanım with the gasoline,

before setting her afire.  After the Gendarmerie processed Ekrem A.,

he was brought to court and then to jail.
