What a waste.
The results of a study entitled "Traces of Narcotics and Psychoactive
Materials in Waste Water" by three academicians from Istanbul
University's Cerrahpaşa Hospital have been published in Water
Research Magazine. The study examined wastewater in 14 facilities
around Istanbul in March, June, September and December 2020.
Istanbul's results were compared with those of other large cities around
the world, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York, Munich, Berlin,
Zurich and Shanghai. It turned out that Istanbul's use of narcotics, as
reflected in the wastewater samples, ranked second behind Barcelona.
With regard to heroin, in particular, Istanbul came in second behind
New York and ranked rather low in cocaine use. Adana, in south-central
Turkey, came in third behind New York and Istanbul with regard to
marijuana use.
The study examined the use of marijuana, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines,
methamphetamines and Ecstacy among the Istanbul inhabitants, as
reflected in the wastewater samples. Psychoactive narcotics were
shown to be used more on the European side of the city, with Kadıköy,
Ataşehir and Üsküdar on the Anatolian side reflecting widespread use
of narcotics, compared to their neighboring districts.
After marijuana, heroin was the drug found to be most heavily used and
more so on the European side. With regard to cocaine, again the
European side had more prevalent usage, especially in Beylikdüzü and
Esenyurt.
