Herd instinct
In the 5 Nisan neighborhood of Diyarbakır's Bağlar district, a crowd
of people wanting self-proclaimed "Shaikh" A.A. to write "muska"
(written charms) for them at his home, which is surrounded by barbed
wire and cameras, was filmed. The "Shaikh"'s service is implemented
by an appointment system, such that those who come to the home in the
morning and who want a "muska" from the "shaikh" get a green card for
500 TL (about $18.75), and those who want A.A. to merely pray for
them buy a white card for 250 TL.
A.A. generally shows up in the afternoon to meet the appointment-
holders and analyze their problems. He also offers a "VIP Service"
whereby A.A. writes "muska" for well-off requesters at a home in
Kayapınar district in the evenings. A.A.'s monthly income exceeds
1 million TL (about $37.500) per month (!).
The Diyarbakır police fraud unit has taken A.A. into custody.
