M.K. seen entering his tunnel of doom.
In Karaman province, merchant M.K. (42) couldn't pay his debts
so he borrowed 100,000 TL (about $3,000) from a loneshark but
over the course of two years his debt to a number of loansharks
grew to 20 million TL (about $580,000 !). When M.K. couldn't pay,
all his loansharks began to threaten him so he fled from Karaman
and through his lawyer Halil Açıkgöz filed a criminal complaint
against the loansharks with the public prosecutor..
In his complaint, M.K. stated that "I was in charge of the Has
Çobanoğlu Trade Construction Industry Tourism Ltd. company
in Karaman. In 2022, I was unable to pay some debts and in
January of that year Veli Ü. called me, saying he'd heard I was
having financial problems. A few days later I borrowed
100,000 TL from Veli and 10 minutes later his man Fatih G.
brought me the money wrapped in a newspaper (!).
Veli wanted me to sign a promissory note, such that I would
pay him back 160,000 TL in 30-40 days. A month later he
called me and demanded payment. I said 'give me another day'.
Veli refused and said my debt had risen to 320,000 TL. This
process continued until June 2024, at which point I had given
Veli promissory notes totaling 15 million TL (!).
Prosecutors taking a statement from "Arap Ramazan".
As far as I can recall, Veli went to jail for loansharking in June
2022. When he got out a few months later he told me that
he wanted me to pay him right away. I couldn't so in October
2022 I got in touch with loanshark Ramazan (Arap Ramazan)
A. and his son Ahmet A. in Karaman and obtained 7 million TL
from them. In May 2023, Ahmet A. demanded payment so I
wrote him an undated check for 4,500, 000 TL. But he wanted
me to sign over the titles of two homes I owned to him and out
of fear for my family's safety I did so.
In May-June 2024 Veli Ü, Ramazan A. and Ahmet A. came to
my workplace a number of times and threatened me, saying
"We won't let our money get away. We'll destroy you and your
family!"
In order to pay them, I borrowed 4,830,000 TL from another
loanshark named Mustafa Ç., (!) giving him a check for 7,400,000
TL in exchange. As all the loansharks' threats continued, I decided
to flee from Karaman on 12 June 2024. Veli Ü.'s goon Aytekin K.
visited my brothers Muhammet K. and Muhammet A.K., asking
where I could be found. My complaint concerns Veli Ü., Ramazan
A., Ahmet A., Mustafa Ç. Aytekin K. and Orhan K., all of whom
subjected me to loansharking and victimized me."
Karaman has no seacoast, yet it's filled with sharks...
