In Tekirdağ's Marmaraereğlisi district a minibus went out of control
and hit the containment barrier.  Because the minibus's door was open
(!), the driver's wife and daughter were thrown out onto the road and
died.

Ahmet Süpürgeci (36)  (whose surname means 'streetsweeper') was
driving his minibus, plate nr. 22 AP 751 (Edirne), along the Tekirdağ-
Istanbul highway when he lost control and hit the barrier.  His wife
Gamze (30 and daughter Sudenaz (12) spilled out through the open
door onto the roadway and both lost their lives.  Ahmet and his other
children Baran and Edanur were injured in the accident.

Life imitates art: in the film "Vavien" (from the French
'va-et-vient') a husband (right) installs such a two-way device
in his minibus so that the door 'accidentally' opens and his
wife (peeking over a shoulder at left) spills out.

Gendarmerie officers arriving at the scene searched high and low
for the door, only to learn from Ahmet that the family had removed
the door so that the chicks they were bringing to market could have
air.  Gendarmerie troops gathered up some of the chicks that also
spilled out onto the roadway.

TNT History Archives: Polish Painter & Peevish Padishah (1872)

Padişah Abdülaziz’e ‘hayalperest’ demiş
Chlebowski's  unfinished painting depicting the conquest of
Istanbul in 1453.

The name of Polish artist Stanislav Chlebowski came up during
President Erdoğan's visit to Poland two years ago.  In particular,
the interest in Chlebowski centered on the half-finished "Fetih"
(Conquest) picture that the artist painted at the request of Sultan
Abdülaziz and the efforts since then to bring the picture back to
Turkey.

Chlebowski's unknown letters have been uncovered by Dr. Agata
Wöjcik of Cracow Pedagogy University.  In the letters, contrary to
what was thought, Chlebowski revealed that he didn't like the Sultan
and considered him a "day-dreamer" and "hot-tempered".  The book
has been translated into Turkish by Nazan Erbil.

In his letters, Chlebowski said that Abdülaziz constantly interferred
with his work, noting that "working for Abdülaziz is like being in
captivity.  The Sultan likes wild horses and I insisted that I was
painting such horses.  I'm making the painting not just for the Palace,
but for the general public, as well.  I want to recoup the time I spent
for money in the Palace.  I did the painting with the Sultan breathing
down my neck so most of my valuable time was spent catering to
his whims."

While Chlebowski was doing the painting in 1872, the Palace was
topsy-turvy and he didn't get his salary.  Archival documents show
that the Palace owed the Polish painter 5,000 liras and only paid
him 150 liras.  Abdülaziz was assassinated (1876) while Chlebowski
was working on "Fetih".  The painter fled to Paris and tried to complete
the giant painting but died before he could.  His sister then gave
the picture to the Polish Cracow National Museum.

Russian girlfriend's sister told Ömer's friend Erkan E. (37) about the
situation so Erkan came to the house while Ömer was elsewhere and
threw all of Ömer's belongings out in the street.

Flat Earth's Antarctican Embrace

                            Earth, a.k.a. Planet Frisbee.

Doğukan Özkan, the president of the Duz Dünya Derneği (Flat Earth
Association claims that views of Antarctica in existing models of the
globe do not reflect reality so he is offering 100,000 TL (about $18,000)
to anyone who takes a photo of Antartica, which he claims is actually
a glacial mountain range that surrounds the Earth.

Özkan continues to defend his flat Earth theory, which is derided by
scientists.  He has already promised a 50,000 TL award to anyone
who can prove that the Earth is a globe and now he's offering 100,000
TL for a picture of Antarctica.

Despite the invitation of Turkish astrophysicist Dr. Umut Yıldız, who
works for NASA,  for Özkan to tour NASA facilities, Özkan still
asserts that the photographs that NASA shows the world do not reflect
reality.  He declared that "there is a mass in the south that is called
Antarctica but in the flat Earth model it is actually ice mountains
that surround the Earth.  It is not really a continent."

"When we look at flight paths with today's technology, we see that no
flights pass over the Antarctica continent because it is technically
impossible to fly over a supposed continent that is not even there.  The
real Antarctica is the glacier mountain range around the Earth.  I'm
offering 100,000 TL to anyone that can prove this and our association
will pay the money on the spot."

TNT History Archives: Russian Overreach and Japan-Turkey Asiatic Bonding (1905)

//Ed. Note: A well-informed Dr. Şerefeddin Mağmumi,
writing in exile in Cairo in 1905, took the opportunity to
lambast the Russians for their disastrous Far East
expansionism and to heap praise on the Japanese.//

"Sinking of the Petropavlovsk," by Yamada Hampo, 1904.
The sinking of the "Petropavlovsk" in Port Arthur
harbor in April 1904, with Admiral Makarov one of
the victims.

They say that “a little greed causes great loss”.  But what about big
greed?  This is what has befallen Russia, which like the Italians and
the Germans, is not content with its own land to feed its populace and
feels the need to extend its reach outwardly .  Yet, Russia has its own
vast expanse of land available, relative to its population, from the
Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea and from Poland to Siberia, but this is
not enough to quench Moscow’s desire to occupy other lands!

So Russia has marched to the other end of Asia, where its greed again
balooned.  In the last war with China the Russians occupied Port Arthur
in 1897 -with what right and authority remains unknown - only to lose it
to the Japanese at a great cost of lives.  Moscow spent millions to fortify
Port Arthur and essentially occupied Manchuria, which is bigger than
Italy, on the pretext of protecting the 1.5-meter guage railway it built
through there, leasing the province from China for 99 years without
firing a shot.

//Ed. Note: fun fact about Port Arthur:
Surrounded by ocean on three sides, this strategic seaport was
originally known to the Chinese as Lüshun. It took its English
name, Port Arthur, from a British Royal Navy Lieutenant
named William C.Arthur who surveyed the harbor in the
gunboat HMS Algerine in August 1860, during the Second
Opium War.//

Well fine, but one cannot necessarily digest everything one swallows
and, in fact, may start to regurgitate it.  This is the situation our friend
Moscow finds itself in right now.   The Japanese, suddenly awakening
from the dark horizon of the Far East, have over four centuries become
“Asia’s English” and have had the boldness and the courage to take on
the insatiable, tireless “Bear of the North”,  beating this terrible monster
into submission in their first encounter.

Death of Admiral Makarov click here for info on Makarov
and his demise at this first encounter of the Russo-Japanese
War at Port Arthur.

From the start, the order and sobriety in Japan, not seen even in Europe
and America, has prevailed.  On the other hand, mayhem is the rule in
Russia, with inauspicious activity occurring all over the country.  The
admirals, marshalls and generals are going to St. Petersburg, where
they kiss the Czar’s hand and the priests’ skirts.  Then they stop off in
Moscow to visit monasteries and ask for assistance from the various
saints.  Until they reach the distant battlefield, they present each other
with bejeweled portriats of “The Trinity”.  Yet, despite these pompous
shows of religious fanaticism, it wasn’t these holy zealots who had the
last laugh but, rather, the pagans.

Admiral Makarov went to the front with more than 150  holy pictures
stuffed into crates and set out to face the Japanese fleet at Port Arthur
harbor with 8 armored ships, with disastrous results.  On the banks of
the Yalu River a Russian regiment was surrounded by the Japanese and
a Russian priest out front clutching a crucifix took an infidel Japanese
bullet as the battle began.  Russian Army Commander Alexei
Kuropatkin declared that he would sign a peace treaty in Tokyo but
instead, he avoided capture and fled first to Mukden and then to Harbin.
So much for being a peacemaker!! And what of the distinguished Czar
and Czarina!  They say that “one has to bear the consequences of his
own acts”.

I will never forget the press congress I participated in recently during
the Paris exhibition.  There were two Japanese journalists there.  Our
French hosts arranged for visits to places of natural and historical
interest in various provinces and cities.

During these excursions a young Japanese journalist who worked as
the American correspondant for a Tokyo newspaper, the name of which
I cannot remember, enlightened us on some subjects.  We we’re at our
last stop, staying at the Imperial Hotel in the town of Chamonix,
considered the “watchman” of  Mount Blanc.  Before parting, this
young Japanese said to us “even though the Turks have been Europeans
for a few centuries, they are essentially Asians.  Our old neighbor, our
old friend.  We’re almost relatives and we have the same common enemy
that separates us.  You are the moon and we are the sun.  We will march
from the east and you from the west and we will meet and embrace at
the Ural Mountains.”

As we parted, I listened to this as if it were a pleasant dream.  Today,
though, I see that yesterday’s dream is nearly becoming today’s reality.
Those little giants are expelling the Russians from Manchuria and
they’re takıng the road toward the Urals.  Who knows? Is this the world
now?   If one looks at history one can see many states going to war to
conquer the world, only to eventually contract and fail.  Only their
names remain.  Perhaps Russia’s end is the same.  Perhaps the “Gog
and Magog” revealed in the holy books are these Japanese!  They’ve
seized Manchuria and maybe after civilizing the people of Korea and
Manchuria they’ll take the next step forward to Lake Baykal.

There is one more thing to consider:  if one day the Japanese Army
reaches the Ural Mountains, I wonder whether they will find and
embrace the Turks there?

//Ed. Note: Gog and Magog, in the Hebrew Bible, the
prophesied invader of Israel and the land from which he comes,
respectively; or, in the Christian Scriptures (New Testament),
evil forces opposed to the people of God. Although biblical
references to Gog and Magog are relatively few, they assumed
an important place in apocalyptic literature and medieval legend.
They are also discussed in the Qurʾān (see also Yājūj and Mājūj).

Arab Prince Wins at Roulette, Loses Cash to Bodyguards

Maybe they should just play canasta...

In June, Prince İsmail Hüseyin Akbar of the Bahrain royal family,
gambled at a 5-star hotel in Girne, in the Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus (TRNC).  Akbar played mostly roulette and ended the night
with winnings of $198,500, which he then gave to his 3 bodyguards so
the money could be transferred to his bank account.

However (!), two of the three bodyguards fled Girne with some of
the cash.  Akbar alerted TRNC police to the theft and an investigation
was started about how Akbar gave the money to the bodyguards and
whether there had been a violation of the TRNC law governing the
transfer of foreign currency out of the country (amounts over 10,000
Euros or equivalent require TRNC approval for transfer.)

Three days ago, the third bodyguard, Fadi el Khoury, was arrested
as he tried to pass through the Beyarmudu border gate with the
Greek Republic of Cyrpus.  Police found messages and calls on
Khoury's cellphone which he had exchanged with the other suspects,
İ.M. and İ.Ç.  Khoury was jailed in Girne the day before yesterday.

Experts on TRNC casino operations noted that customers from the
Middle East are very important for the casinos, whose own personnel
generally market and publicize the hotels in Arab countries.  In
addition, though, there are 'junketeers' who arrange pleasure trips
for groups and get commissions from the casinos, depending on
how much their group members lose (!) at the casino tables.  Word-of-
mouth hotel recommendations are also very important for Arab
customers from their friends.
