On 17 June in Datça district of Muğla province a family argument
among Sevgi Ağı (58), her daughter Özlem Tutlu (26) and her
unemployed son-in-law Ali Murat Tutlu resulted in Ali Murat bey
stabbing Sevgi hanım to death with a bread knife. He and his wife
were taken into custody.
In his statement to police, Ali Murat explained that the couple and
Sevgi hanım were living in the same house, with them on one floor
and Sevgi hanım on the other. He added that "we wanted to leave and
live on our own. Sevgi hanım objected, went to the kitchen on the
pretext of making coffee and returned with a knife, heading towards
my wife. I intervened and somehow took hold of the knife. My
mother-in-law is a big woman and it was all I could do to hold my
own, so I started flailing away with the knife to defend myself."
Özlem hanım essentially confirmed Ali Murat's narrative but they
were both jailed.
After an investigation, the Muğla public prosecutor prepared an
indictment. A search of the house had turned up packaging tape,
gloves, scissors and a plastic bottle with flammable jelly inside.
The prosecutor opined that the couple planned to murder Sevgi
hanım using these items.
Which ones were the worst?
Also in the indictment, it was noted that on Ali Murat bey's
Facebook page the words "ZukoZilo" appeared next to his
picture. In the Nyanja language, the official language of the
Chewa people of Malawi, "ZukoZilo" means "you will die."
In a posting in 2021, Ali Murat bey asked for recommendations
for films about serial murderers. (!)
The prosecutor alleged in the indictment that the couple went
to see Sevgi hanım on that day intending to kill her and asked
for life sentences for both of them.
