The punch he claimed wasn't, was.
In Karabağlar, Izmir, on 22 June, auto painter Sedat Necmi Gültiren (62)
was eating in a restaurant with his daughter and his 10-year-old
granddaughter. After the meal, as Gültiren was paying the bill, his
granddaughter went outside to get into their car.
By mistake, the little girl got into a similar-looking car belonging to
construction firm owner Nihat Pekyen (45). Seeing this from his
table in the same restaurant, Pekyen raced out to his car and began to
strike the little girl (!). Gültiren saw what was happening and intervened
to protect his granddaughter. An argument ensued between Gültiren and
Pekyen, who punched the grandfather in the face and chest. Gültiren
fell to the ground and 8 days later he died.
Pekyen was arrested and charged with murder, with a sentence of from
12 to 16 years requested by the public prosecutor. The autopsy report
stated that Gültiren died from "broken bones, head trauma and resulting
complications."
In his defense, Pekyen said that while he was eating with his fiancé he
saw someone he didn't recognize in his car and tried to get the little
girl out of it. When Gültiren intervened Pekyen said that the
grandfather attacked him so he only pushed him in response. Pekyen's
punches, though, were captured on video images from the scene. (!)
Answer: punch the other guy in the face first and
knock him out.
