A soldier's work is never done: "Other duties as assigned".
A flat can be purchased for 3 kilos of saffron: Soldiers have begun
guarding the fields around the clock.
The saffron harvest, synonymous with the Safranbolu district of
Karabük and sold for 600,000 lira (about $14,200) per kilo, is also
in full swing in Çorum. Farmers are keeping watch over their fields
day and night to protect their valuable crops, while gendarmerie
teams are keeping a close eye out for thieves.
Saffron, which has reached prices of up to 600,000 lira per kilogram
this season, can bring farmers considerable wealth if produced
efficiently. Çorum Governor Ali Çalgan visited saffron producers
in their fields and stated that production is the most important
factor in social development.
With the astronomical rise in the value of saffron, incidents of
field theft have increased, and farmers continue to guard their
saffron fields day and night to protect their valuable crop.
Gendarmerie teams are also on duty in the fields to ensure smooth
production and prevent untoward incidents, while night-vision
cameras are constantly monitoring the fields for security.
Farmers report that they harvest between 24 and 25 kilograms of
crop from an average-sized saffron field throughout the season.
They note that this year's saffron yield is higher than in previous
seasons, with a large portion of the crop sold abroad.
