"How would you like it?". "Hmmm, hold the detergent."
In the Ömer Avni neighborhood of Istanbul's Beyoğlu district at
around 1 o'clock in the afternoon on 17 November, engineer
Ayben Özçilingir Turtura (26) ordered Turkish coffee at a café
where she and her friends were chatting.
With her first sip, Ayben hanım felt nauseous and rushed to the
ladies room. Next, because she couldn't catch her breath and her
tongue froze, Ayben hanım was taken to a hospital, where she
was put in intensive care and intubated based on the suspicion
of caustic poisoning.

An investigation at the café revealed that E.Ö. (52), the father
of the café managers, had put dishwashing detergent in the
coffee cups and M.A. (50) then made the coffee, not realizing
that the cups had detergent still in them (!).
G.S.Ö (26) and S.N.Ö. (28), were identified by police as the
café's managing owners. S.N.Ö. and M.A. were taken into
custody, with E.Ö. and G.S.Ö. giving statements to the police.
The café was sealed shut by local authorities. S.N.Ö and M.A.
were put under house arrest and forbidden to leave the
country, while E.Ö. and G.S.Ö. were released under judicial
supervision.
Ayben hanım was subsequently taken off the respirator and
her overall health condition is improving.
