The congressional taxidermist will stuff the wildlife that
roamed into the hall and mount it in the Senate dungeon.
While the rest of the world worried about the fate of democracy during
the raid on the U.S. Congress on 6 January, Şahin Şerfoğulları, the
mayor of Elazığ in eastern Turkey, registered his special concerns on
Twitter: "We're anxious about something happening to our 'vişneçürüğü'
(purplish brown color) marble!"
It turns out that the marble behind the presiding officer's desk in
the congressional hall comes from Elazığ's Alacakaya district. There
is also some 'vişneçürüğü' marble in the White House. Elazığ, which
has just 7% of Turkey's marble reserves, has exported its unique
'vişneçürüğü' marble to more than 60 countries.
The mayor's Twitter statement was met with some blow-back from
his fellow 'gakkoş' (nickname for people from Elazığ): "It's not
Elazığ marble, it's Alacakaya marble!" and "Rather than worry about
marble, the mayor should be doing something about the sorry state of
Elazığspor (football team)!"
In the end, both American democracy and the marble survived.
