Now trending on Instagram and WhatsApp, in the wrong
direction...
A.F.M. (38), an Iranian woman living with her son in Istanbul, has been
experiencing some headaches with the internet. Recently, A.F.M. lost
money to a ring the reached her via Instagram and now two telephone
lines have been opened in her name. Sexually explicit writings and
photos are being sent to many people via these lines in exchange for
money.
On 1 September, two separate SMS messages came to the lines registered
in A.F.M.'s name from a GSM company, informing her that new lines
had been opened in her name (!). Astonished, A.F.M. called the company
but was directed to go to one of the GSM company's stores to try to resolve
the problem.
As A.F.M. was dealing with this issue, her friends began receiving
messages on the "A.F.M. telephone lines" via WhatsApp proposing
sexual relations, with rates and pictures of a woman with her face
covered. Learning about these messages, A.F.M. went to the public
prosecutor to file a complaint, declaring that she had no relation to the
telephone lines whatsoever.
With regard to the Instagram fraud incident, A.F.M. explained that a
message came to her account from someone named "Mehmet Ok" who
told A.F.M. that she could garner 38,000 TL from a 250 TL wager. At
first, A.F.M. was skeptical (!) but eventually gave in and sent the
money, only to be told that "you won 38,600 TL but you have to pay
a 10% tax in order to access the money."
So A.F.M. sent 4,800 TL to cover the tax levy (!) and was told that
"since you're a foreigner, you have to send another 3,860 TL.
Otherwise, the government will come after you." In total, A.F.M.
sent 8,900 TL (about $1,000) to the account of one "Tolga Demirci",
after which she filed a complaint with the police.
Internet love hurts, too.
