Just plain bizarre.
The day before yesterday a Vehbi Koç Elementary School schoolbus,
bearing license plate number 34 LHF 576, was hijacked in Kadıköy,
Istanbul, at about seven-thirty in the morning, with 10 children and a
woman hostess aboard. As the woman and the children cried from
fright, hijacker Tolga Nalbant "reassured" them, saying "I'm not going
to do anything to you, I just need the vehicle."
After disembarking the hostess and kids in Erenköy, Nalbant drove to
Pendik, where police found the abandoned schoolbus. Meanwhile,
Nalbant borrowed money from a friend and boarded a bus at Gebze,
en route to Ankara.
Arriving in the Turkish capital, Nalbant's first stop was the Presidential
compound at Beştepe. He wanted to enter the compound but was
restrained by guards so he blurted out in desperation "I hijacked a
schoolbus to come here!" This statement prompted the guards to take
him into custody and he was turned over to a police team that came to
Ankara from Istanbul, where he was brought to court in the Anadolu
Justice Hall and incarcerated.
Entry restricted, especially for school bus hijackers.
