The moral of the story: get a lawyer with a ruler.
On 9 August 2022, Emir Çelik (26) was working as a bouncer at a
nightclub in Bursa when he was killed by gunfire coming from a vehicle.
Eight suspects were charged with murder, with life sentences requested,
and three others were charged with aiding the killers and destroying
evidence, crimes which called for sentences of up to five years.
Subsequently, the victim's cousin İ.Ç. (34), considered a suspect but
not jailed pending trial, was charged with murder, with a life sentence
requested.
İ.Ç.'s lawyer Sedat Gülen prepared his client's defense, asserting that,
based on a reenactment of the murder at the crime scene and video
evidence, since İ.Ç. was just 30 centimeters (about 1 foot) away from
Çelik and there were no gunpowder stains found on Çelik's clothes the
victim must have been shot from a distance rather than from up close.
Consequently, İ.Ç. was acquitted by the court. (!)
"Liars", "lawyers" - it's just a matter of pronunciation.
