The wannabe "lion" and his prey.
E.K. is a 16-year-old girl who lives in the Selamet pasture of Derik
village in Diyarbakır's Bismil district with her mother and siblings,
having lost her father 12 years ago. There are 13 households in the
pasture and everyone is related.
Two years ago, Aslan Karabaş (37), (whose first name means 'lion')
the father of 7 children (!), said that he wanted E.K. as his second wife.
Both E.K. and her mother refused, prompting Karakaş to grab his
rifle and pace threateningly in front of their house, declaring "you
will be mine! If you marry someone else I'll kill you and him!"
E.K. mother complained to authorities but, under pressure, withdrew
the complaint.
Unable to handle the related pressure and harassment, E.K. had to
drop out of school. Karakaş's current wife went to E.K.'s mother
and said "give us your girl. I'll give her a home and furnish it."
but the mother chased her away, too. E.K. was too afraid to even
come out on her home's balcony but she has decided to marry a
friend.
When Karakaş heard this news, on 4 February he fired on E.K. and
her mother as they were getting into a car. E.K. was hit by three
bullets and seriously wounded. There were 30 bullet holes in the
car.
Karakaş fled and is still on the lam. E.K.'s older sister H.G. said
that "when his home was searched they found a raft of unlicensed
guns. We've heard that he is staying in his older sister's house in
Susurluk, in Balıkesir province. He also has uncles in Mardin.
While my sister is in torment, his wife Remziye Karakaş came to
my mother with money to try to get her to withdraw her complaint.
Everyone is criticizing us: 'why didn't you give him the girl?! Now
look what's happened! We're all guilty of not stopping him. If it
were someplace else everyone would be up in arms and he would
be arrested."
