And they say electricity and water don't mix...
The Turkish company Karpowership, which has been providing electrical
power to Lebanon with two of its floating power plants, has stopped
providing electricity because of non-payment. Karpowership's
ships provide 370 megawatts or one-fourth of the country's
electricity. Transmission was halted yesterday at 0800 hours.
Karpowership explained to Hürriyet that "we are very sorry to have cut
the electricity feed but for 18 months we have received no payments and
there is no payment plan. Up to now, we have been very flexible." A
source close to the company said that Karpowership is owed in excess
of $100 million.
According to Lebanese press reports, a $25 million penalty will be
assessed against Karpowership, within the scope of a corruption
investigation, and the company's ships will not be allowed to leave
Lebanese waters.
A source said that "Neither the company nor its lawyers have been
officially informed of such an investigation. The company's agreement
with Lebanon will end in September. The company hopes to remain in
the region until then and wants there to be a payment plan arranged by
the region until then and wants there to be a payment plan arranged by
then. I think the ships could leave the region if the company wanted that.
If it were otherwise, there would have to be an official warning to stay."
The same source said that the ship's personnel, who are mostly Lebanese,
have not been adversely affected by the situation.
