University's academic association's U.S. advisor.
The "donation scandal" at Sakarya University is in the news. The
claim is being made that foreign students wanting to register at the
university had to pay an extra $500. The scandal came to light
because of a complaint made to the Indonesia representation of
MÜSİAD (an Islamic-oriented Turkish businessmen's association).
Indonesian students were asked to make a $500 "donation" to the
Sakarya University Members and Graduates Association, to which
the school's academicians belong and direct. The Indonesians
complained to the MÜSİAD Indonesia representation, which, in
turn, forwarded the complaint to YÖK (Senior Education Council
of Turkey).
Documents showing that the "donations" were solicited from the
Indonesians and the complaint petition were sent to YÖK and
an investigation has begun.
"What?"
Sakarya University Rector Fatih Savaşan explained (lamely) that
"there's no question of mandatory "donations". But, of course,
there may be voluntary donations. The Association is not required
to disclose information about donations, although the public
prosecutor can request it. YÖK has been given the required
information. I don't think there were any forced donations but
we're looking into it." (!)
Adapazarı is also known as Sakarya.
