//Ed. note: "Enver Paşa" was still "Enver Bey" in July 1913, when
he led Turkish troops into Edirne, which had been taken by the
Bulgarians, during the First Balkan War, in March of that year.
This article about the East Turkistan celebrations was published
in the Istanbul journal Türk Yurdu on 3 October 1913.
The celebration of Enver Bey's Edirne triumph in East Turkistan
was something of a harbinger of things to come, as can be seen by
this TNT report about him in Turkistan in 1922:
Coincidentally, at that time a German archeologist was exploring
in East Turkistan and provided some interesting insights into the
situation there in 1913-14 in his related article, serialized by TNT:
Yiying (Gülçe). A long way from Edirne.
The Turks of East Turkistan have celebrated the re-taking of Edirne.
We read this joyful news in "Vakit" newspaper:
"As soon as the city of Gülçe (Yining) in Chinese Turkistan learned
via a telegram from the St. Petersburg news agency on the morning of
11 July (25 July by the Gregorian calendar) that Turkish soldiers under
the command of Enver Bey had re-taken Edirne (on 23 July), all of
the city's stores immediately closed, commerce came to a halt and the
local residents of Gülçe poured onto the streets with flags of the
Chinese Republic in their hands.
Turks who are Chinese citizens beat drums and played their musical
instruments in the streets and then went to 'Gülşen Garden' on the
edge of the city by carriage, on horseback and on foot. The garden
was decorated with flags of the Chinese Republic and the city's
richest man, Bahaeddin Musa Bey Efendi, invited the Turks who are
Russian citizens, as well, bringing both Chinese and Russian Turks
together for a feast in the garden.
An hour before noon, with everyone gathered around a fellow got up
and read the news agency telegram about the re-taking of Edirne,
explaining the importance of this development. In response, the
crowed shouted "God is Great!" and applauded. Next, the Koran was
read by the Moslem clergy and everyone prayed for the souls of those
Moslems who died in Edirne and in the Balkan War.
After that, a youth with a nice voice recited the poem written by
Northern Turk (Tatar) Abdullah Tevkayev's about Enver Bey.
Everyone was quite moved by this poem and prayers were said for
the late Tevkayev's soul, as well.
The feast then began with about 100 samovars boiling and tea
distributed to everyone. Food and drink was plentiful and the
Turks of Gülçe enjoyed themselves in celebrating the re-taking of
Edirne and then returning to the city as darkness fell."
