He made his mark in Manhattan & Brooklyn.

Dutchman Jan Janszoon van Haarlem changed his name and religion to
become the Turkish pirate Young Murat Reis, sailing from the port of
Sale in Morocco to the North Atlantic as far as Iceland, where he made
slaves of hundreds of Icelanders in 1627.

Murat Reis's son Anthony was born to a Moroccan woman and he
set foot on Holland's Manhattan island colony of New Amsterdam in
1633, becoming known to everyone there as "Türk Anthony".  Raised
by his father as a Moslem, the records of New Amsterdam show
"Türk Anthony" as the colony's first Moslem and first Turk, albeit
an 'honorary' one, given his Dutch-Moroccan parentage.

But "Türk Anthony" was at odds with Dutch policies.  He defended
minorities and opposed the slave trade in New Amsterdam.  So he
moved to Brooklyn where he owned a large plot of land that came to be
known as "Türk Adası" (Turk Island).  "Türk Anthony" converted to
Christianity, in line with his neighbors, and a Kuran he owned was sold
at auction a few generations later.

"Türk Anthony"'s descendants are said to have included Warren
Harding, the 29th U.S. president, and the industrialist Vanderbilt's
family.
