Lots of loaves but no fishes.
In Erzurum, the tradition of '1000 Hatim' (recitation of the Koran from
beginning to end) begun by Pir Ali Baba 487 years ago to protect
against natural disasters is continuing. Since 13 December, 45,835
'hatim' prayers have been recited in a number of mosques, with 5,000
people participating in the recitations over the course of a month.
In accordance with the tradition, Muhittin Olçun left 1001 loaves of
bread on the mountain where Pir Ali Baba's tomb is located, in Dutçu
village of Palandöken district, for the wild animals living there. But
this time, he returned to the mountain to leave 2001 loaves of bread
in light of the earthquakes, avalanches and airplane crash experienced
in Turkey lately, as well as to ward off the transmision of the
Coronavırus from China. (!)
Olçun, who is a clergyman with a TV program (!), took along local
shopkeepers with him to the mountain. He explained that "Pir Ali
Baba said that if you recite '1001 Hatim' each year, God will protect
the country from natural disasters. For years, I've been leaving 1001
loaves of bread for the wild animals as part of the tradition."

"But with all the catastrophes lately, I'm leaving 2001 loaves now.
Also, when the animals can't find food in the wild they come down to
the cities and towns. In particular, the wolves kill our dogs. In Bursa,
wild pigs have stormed a market. A population that ignores animals'
needs can have no peace. Actually, the animals in the wild have be
entrusted to us so we have to look after them."
Palandöken district is located just south of Erzurum city.
