The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Olive Grove.
Policeman Ömer E. (40) lent his car to relative İ.A. in Susurluk district
of Balıkesir province. İ.A. then picked up two hitchhikers and began
to drink alcohol while driving. After the three stopped at a restaurant,
İ.A. continued drinking and asked one of the hitchhikers to drive in his
stead. Taking full advantage, the hitchhikers drove off without İ.A. (!)
Two hours later at a police checkpoint in Karacabey, Bursa, the driver-
hitchhiker ignored a police warning to stop. Over the next 5 days, the
now-car thief-hitchhikers drove around Bursa, filling up with gas at 3
gas stations without paying. Based on video images, police were able
to determine that the driver was Mustafa Alınç (17).
Meanwhile, Ömer E. went into action to recover his car, enlisting the
aid of cousins Halil İbrahim E. and Yunus E. The three cousins learned
that the stolen car had been seen in an olive grove in Geçit village so
they established a stake-out there.
Yesterday at around noon, Alınç came to the olive grove, where Ömer
E. ordered him at gunpoint to stop and get out of the car. But Alınç
drove toward Ömer E., who then shot Alınç dead. The three cousins
fled but were soon arrested by police in the olive grove.
