A group of artists and writers are trying to bring to fruition a bridge
designed by Leonordo Da Vinci that would cross the Golden Horn in
Istanbul. The idea for a modern version of the bridge was raised in
2010, when Istanbul was designated a European Culture Capital city.
Now, the group, led by artist Devrim Erbil, is preparing to broach the
issue again with President Erdoğan.
DaVinci's bridge, had it been built in the early 1500s, would
have crossed the Golden Horn at its juncture with the
Bosphorus and Sea of Marmara.
On 12 February, 22 artists and writers will participate in an exhibition,
"Respect for Leonardo DaVinci" in Beşiktaş, Istanbul. Erbil explained
that "DaVinci informed Ottoman Sultan Beyazid II in 1502 that he
could build the world's largest bridge in Istanbul. Unfortunately, the
project could not be realized. After our exhibition on the 12th, we will
seek an appointment with President Erdoğan, who announced in 2009
an effort to look into building the DaVinci bridge from Eyüpsultan
across the Golden Horn to Sütlüce. If our collective strength can
manage it, such a bridge would bring prestige to Istanbul and Turkey."
A modern DaVinci bridge would be situated toward the
northern end of the Golden Horn, crossing from Eyüp to
Sütlüce.
