What the fashionable kidney patients and donors are wearing
these days in Istanbul.
Police in Istanbul have disrupted a kidney trafficking gang that was
using a hospital in Istanbul for transplants to Bulgarian patients, by
providing fake documents of Bulgarian 'donors'. The gang was led
by a Bulgarian woman working at the Istanbul hospital.
Bulgarian police notified their counterparts in Istanbul that "illegal
kidney transplants are being performed for Bulgarian citizens at a
private hospital in Istanbul." Istanbul police determined that the gang
leader was F.Ö. (55), a woman working at the Istanbul-based hospital
group that also has a clinic in Sofia, Bulgaria's capital. F.Ö. identified
Bulgarian kidney patients through the Sofia clinic and sold them
kidneys illegally. The transplants were then performed at the hospital
in Istanbul.
F.Ö. created fake documents showing that the patients and donors,
all Bulgarians, were related. In one case, Bulgarian kidney patient
K.L. was given a kidney from 'sibling' K.D.L (41), who was actually
unrelated Z.Y.I. (37), and who has since fled to Bulgaria. F.Ö. warned
5 other Bulgarians about Istanbul police activities and 4 of them were
able to return to Bulgaria via the Kapıkule border crossing.
In addition to F.Ö., Istanbul police arrested her husband M.Ö. (60),
along with 3 other Bulgarian citizens. It is illegal in Turkey to sell
kidneys or other organs unless the patient and donor are first degree
relatives. Transplants involving unrelated people must be approved
by an ethics commission assembled by the governor's office.
The Istanbul hospital's officials now claim that F.Ö. hoodwinked them,
as well. (!)
Bulgarians have other options.
