Llama Immunity? click here for an alternative to pickles.
The perfect food...for a pandemic.
According to data from the Aegean Exporters Union, in 2019 Turkey
sold pickles to 98 countries, reaping a record $217 million in revenues.
But this year's first four months' pickle sales have amounted to $76
million, an increase of 30% over last year. The bulk of the 2020 pickle
sales have come from pepper pickles ($34 million), followed by
gherkin pickles ($26 million) and vegetable pickles ($11 million).
Hayrettin Uçak, the head of the Aegean Fresh Fruit & Vegetable
Exporters Union (AFFVEU), explained that because of the Covid-19
pandemic, many countries, and especially European nations, have
increased purchases of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with
preserved products like pickles.
Hayrettin Bey, right, takes a victory lap.
Uçak stated that because of the pandemic, demand for fermented
products that strengthen the immune system has risen sharply
and he foresees $250 million in pickle exports this year. Mehmet
Kırıcı, a AFFVEU board member, noted that "demand from Middle
East countries was cut, but for the past two months there has been an
extraordinary, never-before-seen, increase in demand from Europe."
"We're having trouble keeping up with it. Europe used to get pickles
from a number of places and Italy was our biggest competitor. When
the pandemic stopped work in Italy, demand from us shot up. So
we've added workers rather than lay any off. We expect a pickle
export record this year."
Never too young for a pickle.
