Since the coronavirus pandemic began, Turkey has rescued 65,000
of its citizens from 103 countries around the world. Some of these
rescues have been the stuff of movies. One of them happened in
Bolivia, where a Turk with kidney problems was stranded without
treatment options far from the Bolivian capital.
The Turkish Ambassador to Bolivia, Şerife Serap Özcoşkun,
explained what happened:
"We rescued our citizen from the city of Cochabamba, which is about
400 kilometers from the capital La Paz. The roads were so narrow
and winding that it took us eight hours to get there. Together with
the embassy's first secretary, we took an embassy vehicle with
diplomatic license plates and, because of the strict coronavirus
restrictions on travel, a sign that told the police we were going to
rescue one of our Turkish citizens."
"We picked up our citizen in Cochabamba and returned to the
embassy. Fortunately, there was a cargo plane leaving La Paz
for Sao Paulo, Brazil. We were able to have our citizen taken on
the cargo plane, which belonged to a private citizen, and it flew
off to Sao Paulo."

Meanwhile, in the African nation of Niger, the fuel on the
Turkish Airlines (THY) plane that was there to rescued stranded
Turkish citizens, became too heavy in Niger's 41 degree (about 106
degrees Farenheit). Consequently, in order to be able to take-off,
the plane had to be lightened by 3.5 tons.
The Turkish citizens on board volunteered to have all their baggage
unloaded and the plane took off en route to the colder climes of
Erzurum in eastern Anatolia. THY officials in Niger subsequently
collected all the left-baggage for forwarding later on.
