TNT Smoke & Mirrors Edition: Fake Police Station in Istanbul (mid-1950s)/Part IV/FINAL

//Ed. note: Herewith the conclusion of the story of a fake
police station in Istanbul.  Whether apocryphal or not, it's
a tale for the ages and ranks right up there with the fake
U.S. embassy in Ghana.//

Cibali Karakolu. Cibali Police office. 1950's. Cibali Fatih ...

It happened that the same day, the three charlatans
returned from leave and asked:

"Anything happen while we were gone?"

"We got some coal"

"What coal?!"

Up to now, the three charlatans had paid for the building's electricity,
water and coal themselves, so they were shaken by this development.
They couldn't send the coal back, though.

The temporarily-assigned fellow who'd obtained the coal for
Küçükpazar Karakolu went to see the Sirkeci police chief the next day
and explained the situation. In turn, the Sirkeci police chief  told the
entire tale to Istanbul Police Chief, who dashed off a letter to National
Police HQS in Ankara asking for furnishings for the 'Küçükpazar
Karakolu' that had been 'devasted by a flood or some such disaster'.

Responding a few days later, Ankara asserted that there was no such
police station.  Determined to save the face of the Istanbul police
department, the Istanbul Police Chief summoned all the district police
chiefs in the city and went with them to Küçükpazar Karakolu, where
the chiefs interrogated the police station's 'employees'.

Each one of them was asked "How long have you been at this police
station?"  until the turn came for the three charlatans to be questioned:

"When you started here was this police station already operational?"
At first, they hemmed and hawed but, in the end, they came clean,
explaining "Honestly my chief, when we retired we couldn't think of
a job so we set up this police station."

Tarihten Anekdotlar: Şubat 2017

The wily chief listened and finally said to them "You will never tell
anyone about this.  Leave Istanbul right away with your families
and disappear."

The chief then turned to his district chiefs and said "As of today, this
police station is genuine.  Write a letter to Ankara and just make
something up to justify it."

So, this is how the fake Küçükpazar Karakolu became real and went
on to provide the neighborhood with police services for years to come.
