From the nouveau-freak school of architecture.
The Uğurlu Apartment building in Bağcılar, Istanbul, has become
infamous on social media because it looks like two very different
buildings have been put on top of one another ("uğurlu" means
"auspicious" in Turkish !). Destruction of the eyesore has begun
in accordance with "kentsel dönüşüm" (urban renewal to make
buildings better able to resist earthquakes.)
The 8-story Uğurlu Apartment building on Birlik Avenue in Bağcılar's
Yavuz Selim neighborhood was built in 1995. The first few floors rise
straight up but the upper floors were built with a different architecture.
Consequently, the building has become a symbol of Istanbul's awkward
architecture. There are 14 flats in the building and 60 residents, who
have been relocated, receiving 3,500 TL per month for 48 months
while a new building is constructed.
