Ouch.
On 14 March, the players of the Üsküdar American High School in
Istanbul cheered their football team's goal against Ulus Private Jewish
High School by giving the infamous Nazi salute. (!) This prompted
great astonishment and bewilderment among the Jewish school's
players. When one İzzet Stamati posted news of this on social media
a swift response came from the Turkey Jewish Community's social
media account promising to take up the matter with the school's
administration.
Üsküdar American High School issued the following related
announcement: "our school has nurtured students since 1876. We
feel great sadness with regard to the wrong-headed action of
our players at the football match. We want to emphasize that
our philosophy as an institution of learning is against any sort of
discrimination. We have spoken with the Ulus Private Jewish High
School's officials and an investigation has been started. We would
like to inform everyone that will pursue this matter with care and
importance."
Further performances of ÜAL school play have been put
on hold.
