His home away from home.
Mehmet Övet (42), an electronic technician from Marmaris, has
dodged death seven times. The first time was when he was seven-
years-old and fell seven meters from a 3rd floor balcony while
playing. Övet was in intensive care for four days after the incident.
Seven months later, Övet was cut by mussel shells 6.5 meters
down in the water and passed out. He was saved by citizens at a
depth of nine meters and revived by doctors. In 1991, Övet began
working at an electrical firm and was electrocuted. Subsequently,
he lost his balance while installing an antenna on a roof and fell
9 meters to the concrete ground.
The watch that keeps on ticking...
In 2008, Övet got into an argument with the manager of a 'köfte'
(meatball) restaurant and was shot with a 'pompalı tüfenk' (pump-
action rifle), spending 60 days in intensive care. Next, in 2014,
Övet got into a motorcycle accident, breaking eight bones,
suffering cuts to his lungs, seven clots in his brain and losing 1.5
meters of his intestine. This time he spent 78 days in intensive
care.
Övet applied to the Health Ministry and obtained a document
declaring him 79% impaired, so he has retired. He can't help
but compare himself to a cat vis-a-vis all the lives he's spent up
to now: "My surname 'Övet' means 'thanks' in Arabic so I'm
thankful for dodging death so many times. After I retired on
disability I opened a corn-in-a-cup stand with my wife at the
Marmaris public beach."
