Tethered no more.
The Istanbul municipality (İBB) has begun to take care of 1,177 horses
rescued from pulling carriages on the Prince's Islands off the coast of
Istanbul. Twenty horses have been settled at Istanbul University's
Cerrahpaşa Veterinary School in Avcılar district of the city.
İbrahim Kuran, deputy director of the school, explained that "once
the carriages were prohibited on the islands by İBB, the horses were
brought to specific locations after we tested and treated them for
glanders (a contagious disease among horses). There were 1,500
horses on the islands so we put together a group to determine which
of them were calm and wouldn't present problems for our students.
In the end, we selected 20 horses for our school."
Home, home on the range.
"Horses, unlike other animals, have free spirits so when they're
penned in they get depressed. With regard to a horse we named
'Hürrem', when she came to us she couldn't walk but now, after
we provided some treatments, 'Hürrem' is quite well, playing,
running and grazing."
Free at last!
