Patara'da kazı kavgası: Kepçe operatörü küfretti, profesör tokat ...
A pose that says "don't mess!"

In Kaş, Antalya, an archeological excavation of Patara, the capital of the
23-city Lycia Union in the 1st century B.C., is being overseen by
Prof. Dr. Havva İşkan Işık of Akdeniz University in Antalya.  When
Dr. Işık noticed that a back-hoe was operating in a 30-35 meter area
between the Gendarmerie outpost and the parking lot at the site she
objected to the activity taking place without an archeologist being
present.

Dr. Işık scolded the back-hoe operator and told him to stop.  However,
the operator walked toward Dr. Işık threateningly and insulted her,
prompting Dr. Işık to slap his face (!).  The Gendarmerie was called
to the scene and efforts made to determine whether there had been any
damage to the site by the back-hoe operating without an archeologist's
direction.

Patara'ya adanan bir ömür: Havva İşkan Işık - Haber
           Wouldn't hurt a lamb (!).

Official İsmail Karaman explained to Hürriyet that "there is an
archeologist from our Ministry (Cultural Heritage & Museums) at
the Patara site and another five archeologists that the excavating
firm hired.  An electrical cable was being laid down at the time and
none of these archeologists happened to be there when Havva Hoca
(Dr. Işık) arrived.  She got upset and slapped the back-hoe operator.
Right away, we checked the 70-centimeter-deep cut in the 30-35-
meter area and found no damage to any archeological items.  The
work is continuing."

Fatih Karacan of the excavating firm noted that "our back-hoe
operator was physically assaulted (!) but did not file a complaint."
Another witness related that "the back-hoe operator cursed at Dr.
Işık, walked toward her and twisted her arm.  Then, Dr. Işık
called the Gendarmerie."

As for Dr. Işık, she was reluctant to discuss the episode, sufficing
to say that "I'm at home now. My voice is a bit strained. It was
an unpleasant incident but there's no need to get into the details.
We're doing very good work at Patara and I don't want this incident
to have a negative impact on it.  We only want to complete the work
on time."
