A long way from Athens.
Eşek Adasa (Donkey Island) off the Turkish coast in the Aegean Sea,
has been occupied by Greece for 16 years (!), although according to
international law the island is Turkish territory. Yesterday there was
another provocation when Greek President Katerina Sakellaropulu,
who took office in March, traveled to Eşek Adasa, a part of Aydin
province, for her first overseas trip as president.
Sakellaropulu arrived on the island by helicopter and during her
4-hour visit she said that "this island is an inseparable part of
Greece. It is my duty to be here and we will watch over this
island. Greece seeks good neighborly relations and cooperation
with Turkey but it is not ready to abandon its sovereign rights."
"And your brother-in-law's taverna will go here."
Over the course of 16 years, Greece has armed the island and has
a 145-person military unit there. Currently, a tender has been
announced for the construction of a port by means of extending
the current pier by 400 meters to separate it from the military
area. The tender is open until 27 July and the contract will be
awarded on 31 July.
Meanwhile, yesterday Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter planes
flew over Eşek Island to signal that Turkey does not recognize
Greece's claimed 10-mile Flight Information Region (FIR).
