Nero's flame will burn once more.
Archeological excavation work is continuing at Patara, which was the
capital of the Lycian Union. Included in the plans for Patara is the
restoration of the lighthouse first built during the reign of Roman
Emperor Nero in 64 A.D. The modern world learned of the lighthouse
thanks to William Gell, the head of the Society of Dilettanti, a group
that studied ancient Greek and Roman arts, when Gell toured the area
in 1812-1813.
The father of all dilettantes.
In 1988 Prof. Fahri Işık began excavation around the lighthouse and
in 2004 the light, podium and tower were found in two main portions.
The lighthouse has a spiral staircase inside the tower and the thickness
of the walls is 1.2 meters. Once the restoration is completed the
lighthouse tower will rise to a height of about 26 meters.
Oxymoron: dilettantes at work.
The Lycian Union was established in 180 B.C. as a political and
administrative entity and its representative assembly resembles those
we have today. Prof. Fahri Işık's wife Prof. Dr. Havva Işık, who took
over the dig from her husband, explained that "because of its genuine
democratic structure, the Lycian Union is one that researchers are
very interested in studying there."
Prof. Havva Işık added that "it wasn't the world's first lighthouse.
The first one was at Alexandria. But this Patara lighthouse will be
the only one in the world rebuilt with its original pieces. It is one
of Turkey's most important cultural heritages."
Patara is at lower left.
