"Three, two, one...launch!"
Groom O.K. and his bride D.K., both 17 years old, married in Konya on
3 August with their parents' consent. Preparations then began for a
flashy wedding in O.K.'s hometown of Susurluk in Balıkesir province,
scheduled for 19-21 October. In connection with this event, the groom's
family paid a 250,000 (nearly $9,000) "bride price" to D.K.'s father.
The two families came together in Susurluk on 19 October. However (!),
after the ceremony where gold was pinned onto the bride during the
second day of the marriage celebration, the bride's family claimed they
had to return to Konya because of a relative's death. The groom's family
was suspicious of the other side's apparent urgency and asked that the
gold be left in Susurluk. Ultimately, the two sides agreed to split the gold.
Early golden anniversary
for D.K.
Bride D.K. though, went back to hubby O.K. and alleged that her family
had previously tried to marry her off to other men for money. However
(!), she changed her statement to police in Susurluk again, claiming that
she had been forced at gunpoint and beaten so that she would marry O.K.
Then, D.K. went back to Konya with her family.
O.K. and his family filed a police complaint against D.K. and her family
for fraud. He explained that "the family took the bride and jewelry back
to Konya. The bride said that her family had repeatedly had her do this
trick and she wanted to be saved from it, so she came back to me. But
then she changed her story and accused us. She said that when we both
got on my motorcycle her foot got burned. It's a custom for us to throw
the bride up in the air on "kına gecesi" (night before the wedding when
the bride's fingers and toes are painted with henna). She claimed that
when she was thrown in the air her head hit a piece of wood and her
eye swelled up. Also, she claimed that I pulled the silicon beads from her
hair. She hurt my pride and I'm down on life."
"Kına gecesi"
O.K.'s father Doğan K. (37) asserted that he had been hoodwinked out
of 1 million TL (about $35,000) for the "bride price", wedding expenses
and the cost of the gold.
