"Forget the fuss, take the bus!"
In Istanbul last Saturday, after 13-year-old İ.Ö. finished her additional
work at her school in Çekmeköy, she began to wait for a taxi inside the
guard shack at the school in order to go to her home in Ataşehir. Shortly
thereafter, taxi driver H.G. arrived and İ.Ö. got into his taxi.
However (!), when İ.Ö. arrived at her home she told her family that H.G.
had verbally sexually harassed her during the ride. H.G. was taken into
custody but released after giving a statement at the police station.
The young girl's father B.Ö. was enraged by H.G.'s release, stating that:
"during the ride he was telling my daughter that he's 24-years-old,
drinks alcohol until 3 o'clock each morning and leads a "bohemian" life.
He told my daughter that he's very lonely and said to her 'you look
mature for your age', in an effort to seduce her. He said he was looking
for someone to commiserate with. My daughter was very scared but
gave him brief answers preceded by "abi" ((older brother)) and held her
composure until she came home. But she was white as a sheet when
she arrived. In her statement to police she said she told him 'I advise
you to act like a man if you want attention in Istanbul.' As a father I
will do whatever it takes to see that justice is done!"
H.G. after his release...on the road again.
