Victim of merciless gravity.
On 22 April this year in Bursa's Nilüfer district, while Zekiye Demiralay
was walking with her 8-year-old daughter after a holiday visit she
suddenly collapsed. 11 days later Zekiye hanım passed away.
Police determined that at the time gunshots were fired into the air
during a bride-taking ceremony two kilometers away (!) and they
arrested Ali Özkan for firing the gun in question. Özkan was charged
with "murder with probable intent" and "creating fear and panic with
gunfire" and a life sentence was requested by the public prosecutor.
In his statement in court Özkan explained that "Instead of firing into
the ground, I fired into the air. I regret it." In response, the judge
said "the bullet you fired in the air didn't go into space. Don't you
know about the laws of gravity!" (!) To which Özkan replied "because
of my respect for people I fired into the air." Özkan will remain in jail
as his trial continues.
In a similar incident in Ankara's Şereflikoçhisdar district on 30 September,
Şenol Dursun (48), recently retired from a job working as an appliance
repair expert and the married father of one child, went to the wedding of
a former co-worker's child. The wedding ceremony was held in the
village square and there was celebratory gunfire. Dursun, sitting at a
table, collapsed and died. It has still not been determined from
which gun the bullet that killed Dursun was fired.
Matrimonial collateral damage.
