The fast-moving 'cisim' (body or material thing) viewed by Mehmet
Şeşen (30) as he walked along the shore of Lake Van in Adilcevaz
district of Bitlis province, has once again revived the prospect of
"The Monster of Lake Van". And local journalist İkram Kali related
that the monster was the subject of a headline in an Ottoman
newspaper 131 years ago. (!)
Kali, who has advised many domestic and foreign research groups
about the monster, stated that there was a related report in the 29
April 1889 issue of Saadet newspaper, published during the reign of
Sultan Abdülhamid II. The Saadet article reported that a villager had
been harassed by the monster and there were also statement about the
monster from elderly people in Edremit and Gevaş (on Lake Van's
southeastern shore).
According to Kali, the Saadet report stated that "three people from
Hizan district of Bitlis subdivision went on a trip to Bulanık (in Muş
province) by way of Tatvan and Ahlat, along the shore of Lake Van.
One of the three began to wash himself at the Lake prior to praying.
He entered the water to wash his feet when a sea creature grabbed his
foot and tried to pull him into the water."
(Colorized) police sketch from the Ottoman-era inquiry.
"Despite his best efforts, he couldn't break free from the creature and
cried out to his friends for help. The friends tried to save him from the
creature's grasp but the monster had a hold of the poor fellow's leg from ,
heel to knee. The friends lit a fire and burned the creature's tail, causing
the beast to wail in pain and leap 20-25 meters into the sky, still holding
on to the the man's leg. Shortly thereafter, the creature and his captive
crashed and disappeared into the lake's waters."
And you say there's no proof?!
Getting back to Şeşen, he explained that the living creature he saw
was black and shiny and that it may very well have been "The Monster
of Lake Van". He came to Adilcevaza 6 month ago from Manisa, with
his wife, who was appointed as a teacher in the area. On the day of the
'monster-sighgting' incident, Şeşen went with a freind to a place 6
kilometers from Adilcevaza to collect spring water.
As the two friends walked along the shore of the lake, they noticed
a movement in the water and Şeşen was able to record the scene with
his cellphone camera, showing the fast-moving 'cisim' and the wake
it left as it disappeared.
