Extraordinary situations demand extreme measures.
Despite continued calls by experts for people to 'stay home!', yesterday
Marmara Avenue in the Avcılar district of Istanbul was crowded all
day, with people sitting on benches and fountain walls for hours on
end. Coupled with those coming out for critical needs and jobs, the
avenue was continually packed with crowds.
Police tried to enforce social distancing among the crowds on
Marmara Avenue and in front of the PTT (post office), where people
were queued up to collect unemployment benefits.
"Live Free or Die on the Bench!"
However (!), when the situation did not improve teams from the
Avcılar municipality came in the evening and upended the benches.
In addition, dispersal announcements were continuously blared from
a municipal minibus at the entrance to Marmara Avenue.
