The Turkish cargo ship 'M/V Bellatrix' left Libya with a load but then
caught fire in Italian waters. The 12 crews members asked for
help and another Turkish ship owned by Elkenz Denizcilik, the 'M/V
Arife', went to the aid of the burning ship, taking its crewmembers
on board.
The Italian Coast Guard instructed the Arife to head for the nearest
Italian port so the ship went to Augusta to drop off the Bellatrix crew
and continue on to Spain, its intended destination. However (!), Italian
officials changed their minds, citing the ongoing conornavirus
pandemic, and refused to let the Arife dock at Augusta.
Malta is the small island group just to the south of Augusta.
Meanwhile, the abandoned Bellatrix drifted toward Malta but another
Turkish ship, the 'M/V Pocahard', found it and kept track of it.
The Arife, at this point, sought help from Turkey and the 'Horoz 4'
salvage ship was dispatched from Izmir. Subsequently, the Bellatrix's
12 crewmembers were transferred from the Arife back to the
Bellatrix, which was then towed back to Turkey by the Horoz 4.
Took the only parking space left at Augusta.
