TNT History Mini-Series: Ottoman Quarantine Measures For Mecca Pilgrims (1901)/Part IV/FINAL

//Ed. note: In total, the Ottoman government's 1901
directive for quarantine measures for Mecca pilgrims
included 26 paragraphs, along with additional instructions
for everything from washing down the decks, to fresh
water rations per person, to chemical formulas for
cleaning materials.

Herewith one example://

An "etüv" (sterilizer) of the period, produced at the 'Tersane-
i Amire' (naval shipyard in Istanbul) used for "cleaning
contagious microbes from clothes by the steam method".

Manner for fumigating pilgrims, passengers and their belongings.

Upon arrival at Kameran Island, pilgrims and passengers' dirty clothes
and belongings will be fumigated by means of an 'etüv' sterilizer and
they themselves will wash with a shower or a bath in the sea.  After
they occupy the rooms of the quarantine station, they will be required
to put all their belongings in chests and baskets and leave them out in
the wind and sun for an entire day.

A doctor will verify with his own eyes whether the pilgrims and
passengers have performed these treatments and warn both groups that
they cannot obtain a 'pratika' (clean bill of health) and conclude their
quarantine time unless and until they do.

The instructions for the fumigation treatments can be found in the
pamphlet entitled "General Instructions Related to the Decision Taken
Regarding the Manner of Fumigation at the 15 June 1315 (1899)
Meeting of the Health Committee for Procedures at Quarantine
Stations of the Imperial Ottoman Dominions".

//Ed. note:  the directive ended with the following
statement://

This directive was read and accepted by the Health Committee at its
meeting on 24 August 1315 (1899).
