TNT History Archives: 50% Discount for Sea-Rail Pilgrimage (1913)

//Ed. note: This advertisement for sea-rail travel to the
"Holly City" of Medina was printed in 1913 by Arşak
Garoyan Printers in Istanbul and published in Turkish,
Arabic, Russian and (somewhat comical) English.

The pilgrim would sail to either Beirut or Haifa (spelled
'Caiffa' in the advertisement) and instead of a long overland
trek to Medina by camel, journey in comfort via the Hicaz
(Hedjaz) Railway in "trifling space of 58 hours only."

Pilgrims who wanted to visit Mecca, as well, would take
the train back to Haifa via Damascus (!) and sail down the
Red Sea to Jidda (Djedda) and from there overland to
Mecca.//
