Rampant misspellings and women's names!
Regarding Not Writing the Descriptions of Females in Ottoman
Census Certificates
First of all, most of the official Ottoman certificates received from
the provinces are unreadable and full of misspellings. In addition,
descriptions of females are exempt from inclusion in the certificates
and yet an army major from the province of Cezair-i Bahr-i Sefid
(Aegean islands) has complained that the women in his family have
been described in the certificate given to him.
In both registry and population certificates it is sufficient that only
the names of the father (head of household) be written. Itinerant
recording secretaries, who are replaced and transferred each year, must
be continually reminded to fill out the certificates in the desired manner
and that the names of females shall not be written in these documents,
in accordance with the relevant directive.
Ensure that all provinces and subdivisions are made aware of this
notice from the Population Registry General Administration.
