NASA has likened Turkey's Lake Salda to the Jezero Crater on
Mars. The space vehicle 'Perseverance' blasted off from Cape
Canaveral the day before yesterday en route to the Red Planet.
In a tweet, NASA said that "although they are worlds apart, Lake
Salda in Turkey and the Jezero Crater share geologic similarities."
NASA also revealed that a number of its researchers had visited
Lake Salda in preparation for the 'Perseverance' mission, noting that
"You may not be able to go to the Jezero Crater on Mars but the next
best thing would be to visit Lake Salda in Turkey. Despite being a
world away from each other, Lake Salda and the dried-up lake on
Mars share similar minerals and geology."
Briony Horgan of Purdue University, who was part of the scientific
group that built 'Perseverance', said that "one of the best things about
visiting Lake Salda is that when you stand on the shore of Lake Salda
you get to feel what it was like to stand by the shore of Lake Jezero."
Brad Garczynski, a student who worked with Horgan, noted that
"It is very important to find any evidence there (Jezero) that would
give us proof of carbonates, microbes, organics and past microbial
life, so learning how these carbonates form on Earth is crucial before
going to Jezero.
The Purdue research team's work at Lake Salda was done in
cooperation with Istanbul Technical University.
