German map of the Anastasian Wall.
The Anastasian Wall, the longest defensive wall other than the Great
Wall of China, was built during the 5th century A.D. by Byzantine
Emperors to ward off raids from Thrace by Huns, Slavs and Bulgars.
The 45-kilometer wall stretched from near Silivri on the Sea of
Marmara coast to the Black Sea.
Remaining stretch of wall between Karacabey village
and Yalıköy village on Istanbul's Black Sea coast.
Today, 22 kilometers of the wall remain but it is under attack by
'defineciler' (treasure hunters), as can be seen in an aerial view of
the Georgios Church at the Black Sea end of the wall. Locals in the
area say that the number of holes opened by the 'defineciler' grows
daily as they search for ancient treasures and artifacts.
