This Russian map shows the envisioned new connections
between Azerbaijan-proper and Nakhchivan.  Iğdır in
Turkey is at far left and Baku at far right.

The ceasefire that came into force following the recent 44-days of
fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the disputed Karabagh
region had an important element - the opening of a corridor between
Azerbaijan-proper and its western enclave Nakhchivan, on the border
with Turkey.

At the time of the Turkish War of Independence, Mustafa Kemal
(Atatürk) declared that "Nakhchivan is a Turkish gate and we must
do whatever we can in this regard."  So now, after a century, these
two parts of Azerbaijan will be connected again.  Links between
Nakhchivan and Azerbaijan-proper's western areas can henceforth
be built to enhance economic, energy and logistical ties.

The new corridor will parallel the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route already
established to link Turkey with Central Asia and the Pacific for
the revival of the ancient Silk Road.  Besides Azerbaijan, Turkey
and Russia, Armenia, too, will be able to take advantage of this
new route, where a railroad line will be built, as well.

The construction of the foundation for this railroad, which will run
for 230 kilometers from Horadiz in Fuzuli province to Ağbend
in Zengilan province, has begun.  The line will begin in Kars and
pass through Iğdır in Turkey and across Nakhchivan to link up
with a rail line from Iran to Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Azerbaijan
and Turkey will jointly finance the project.
