"Beat & Release": The Last Supper, Until Miraculously It Wasn't

(Milliyet Newspaper, 5 March 2021)

Last November 3rd, Burak Kıncı, who lives in Izmir's Karşıyaka district,
invited his estranged wife Aycan hanım, who had filed for divorce, to
meet him at a döner kebap restaurant on 1717th Street to talk things
over.  As they dined, Aycan hanım rebuffed Burak bey's reconciliation
proposal so he took a knife from his pocket and stabbed the mother of
his two children 38 times. (!)

Aycan hanım, seriously wounded, was taken to Çiğli Training and
Research Hospital for treatment, while Burak bey was taken into
custody by police and jailed.  The Karşıyaka public prosecutor is
asking for a sentence of up to 20 years in jail for Burak bey for
attempted murder.  In the indictment, the prosecutor stated that on
the day of the incident when Aycan hanım told her husband that it was
"too soon" for her to return home, Burak bey began to stab her.  The
other customers in the restaurant threw silverware and chairs at Burak
bey in order to stop him.

After she recovered, Aycan hanım told the news agency DHA that
she had experienced quite a bit of violence at the hands of her husband:
"All during my marriage he's beaten me and cheated on me.  On the
day that he tried to throw me from the roof (!) I decided to split.  Later,
he sent me a message, wanting to meet, and for the sake of our two
children I agreed.  However, I told him that I didn't trust him and that I
would not change my decision to divorce."

"While we were eating he tried to pressure me to return home. When I
refused he said 'Then have a nice meal, because it's your last one.' (!)  I
got scared and tried to signal to a friend nearby to join us.  But Burak
told my friend to leave and said to me 'why did you signal for your
friend to come?!  I'll stick these döner skewers into you and cut you up!'
When I insisted that I wouldn't return home he pulled a knife from his
pocket and said 'should I stab you first or myself?!  If you're not mine
you're no one's!'  Then he began to stab me in my back. I pleaded for
help from the other customers and while some of them fled, others
threw chairs, plates and silverware at him.  When he dropped the knife
someone pulled me away."

Aycan hanım said it was a miracle she survived: "When I reached the
hospital I had nearly 40 stab wounds and had lost a lot of blood.  The
doctors said they would have to remove my kidney. I told them that I
have two children so they should do whatever they could to save me.
I had many operations and the doctors told my family to be ready for
any eventuality.  I was in intensive care for 15 days. It was very hard
for me.  I thought only of my children while I was being stabbed and
during my treatment.  I was most concerned about leaving them
motherless, than about my own sufferings.  The doctors said my
survival was miraculous."

Aycan hanım said that she is afraid to go outside, even though she knows
that Burak bey is in jail.  In any case, she wants him to get the maximum
penalty: "While the incident was still fresh I had some difficult days
psychologically.  His family is pressuring me to rescind my complaint (!)
But I've gotten the help I needed and left those dark days behind me.
Now I feel strong.  My lawyer, in particular, and other people I don't even
know have been very supportive. I believe that people like Burak must
get the most severe punishment.  That's the only way to deter these kinds
of incidents.  I don't want the person who did this to me to ever leave
prison.  If he does, he'll want to finish what he started with me.  I still
feel like I'm in danger.  My advice to other women like me is to speak
up.  For my children's sake, I put up with him and was silenced, but
look what happened to me anyway."

Aycan hanım's lawyer İslam Gezer said that the attack was planned
and he will present evidence to the court in this regard: "Aycan hanım
was nearly killed by her husband because she wanted a divorce.  We
think that the suspect planned the attack on that day.  Would someone
hoping to convince his spouse to relent from her divorce decision be
carrying a knife with him?!  If you want to make up why would you
bring a hunting knife!?  We will prove with WhatsApp messages that
this incident was fully planned.  This wasn't just attempted murder,
it was premeditated murder.  The suspect should get no reduction of
sentence whatsoever.  Oftentimes suspects tell the court 'oh, I lost my
head for a moment, my wife made me jealous, I was provoked!'  We
don't want the court to fall for any such nonsense."
