Unhealthy human team loyalty and the canine alternative.
Mehmet Çakmak (81) lives in Ordu. While he was watching the
Galatasaray-Kayserispor football match on 13 March at home, the
die-hard (!) Galatasaray fan Çakmak suffered a heart attack. A health
unit arrived at the house and tried to revive Çakmak for 20 minutes.
He was taken to Ordu State Hospital and came back to life there.
Çakmak's dog "Pamuk" (cotton) came along with his family to the
hospital and began a vigil for his master at the hospital door.
Hospital workers took a shine to Pamuk, feeding and caring for the
pooch that stayed on station for 14 days and nights, returning home
with Çakmak when his master was discharged.
A similar incident occurred in Trabzon, where on 19 January
(see "loyal dog six" above) a dog named "Boncuk" waited for his
hospitalized master Cemal Şentürk for five days straight. "Boncuk"'s
faithfulness struck a chord with the Japanese, who have built a
statue in Tokyo commemorating "Hachiko", a dog that waited
9 years (!) for his deceased master. There is even a Japanese film
about Hachiko's story.
