Male passenger beats taxi driver, who fled, and wife. Local
youths then pummeled the male passenger. Street justice.
In Bayrampaşa, Istanbul, yesterday afternoon a man got into an argument
with a taxi driver and began to punch him. When his own wife
intervened he punched her, too. Some youths who were nearby saw
the incident and began to beat the man. And it was all captured on
video. (!)
The incident occurred at the Bayrampaşa Taşköprü taxi stand. The
husband-wife passengers argued with the taxi driver because of
stalled traffic. The husband got out of the taxi and began to beat
the driver. The wife got out of the vehicle to calm her husband but
he began to beat her, as well. Some youths saw the activity and
administered a "meydan dayağı" (group assault on a wrongdoer) to
the husband.
Shopkeeper Rıdvan Zengin explained that "the male passenger was
at fault. He was beating his wife when the youths intervened. The
taxi driver fled out of fear and the woman had a nervous breakdown."
Zeynep Korkmaz, another shopkeeper, said that "the man pushed his
wife to the ground and was hitting her. Just at that moment a group
of youths were passing by and they beat the man. We tried to calm
the woman."
Safely away, driver lamented that
"Some fares are just nuts!"
